Overview

The VEX Robotics Competition is the world’s largest and fastest-growing robotics program for students, designed to inspire the next generation of innovators, engineers, and problem-solvers. Through exciting, game-based engineering challenges, students design, build, and program robots that compete in dynamic matches.

Each season introduces a new game theme, encouraging participants to think strategically, apply STEM concepts, and showcase creativity while solving real-world style problems. With divisions spanning elementary, middle school, high school, and university levels, the competition provides opportunities for students at every stage to engage in hands-on learning, teamwork, and innovation.

More than just a competition, VEX Robotics serves as a platform for students to develop critical STEM skills, strengthen collaboration, and prepare for future academic and career pathways in technology and engineering.

VEX Categories

VEX IQ Robotics Competition (Grades 4–8)

Theme: Mix and Match

Focused on elementary and middle school students.
More than 17,000 teams from 54 countries playing in over 1200 tournaments
Local, regional, national, and world competitions

Challenges include:

Teamwork Challenge: Two teams collaborate to maximize their score.
Robot Skills Challenge: A single robot competes against the clock.
Online Challenges: Coding, essays, research, and other creative tasks.

VEX V5 Robotics Competition (Grades 6–12)

Theme: Push Back

Designed for middle and high school students.
More than 14,000 teams from 53 countries playing in over 1300 tournaments
Local, regional, national, and world competitions

Challenges include:

Standard Matches:: Two alliances of two teams each compete head-to-head.
Robot Skills Challenge: One robot competes individually against the clock.
Online Challenges: CAD, animation, essays, and other STEM-based activities.
